Bikes and mini-train: Alamillo Park with the family

4 h 12 km●●

Alamillo Park was born with Expo 92 as the garden of the Cartuja island and is today Seville's biggest playground: 120 hectares of meadows, orange trees and bike lanes where cars do not exist. At weekends a mini-train runs, there are playgrounds and shaded kiosks, and next to the park stands the Alamillo bridge, Calatrava's most famous work in the city, with its leaning mast and single pylon. Families ride it by bike (rented in the centre or in the park itself), and for those who prefer walking, the stroll from the Barqueta is already a spectacle. Take caps and water: the meadows offer little shade.

Getting there & around

Bike along the bike lane (from the centre, 20 min to the Barqueta) or taxi (8-10 min from the apartment). The park rents bicycles and the mini-train runs at weekends. Sevici has stations in the Alameda area.

The route

1

Apartamento Esencia Sevilla

Starting point. You can cycle there along the city bike lanes or take a taxi to the Barqueta bridge.

Tip: If the plan is by bike, rent them in the centre (several points) or in the park itself. Sevici is the cheapest option for adults.

2

Puente de la Barqueta

The white bridge of Expo 92, built on one huge arch. From its pedestrian walkway the whole Cartuja island and the river boats come into view.

Tip: For the family photo, the bridge's viewpoint at sunset with the Cartuja behind. Scooters cross the walkway without a problem.

3

Parque del Alamillo

Twelve hundred trees, meadows, orange trees and an old farmhouse turned into a visitor centre. The mini-train tours the park at weekends, and there are playgrounds, picnic tables and kiosks.

History: The park opened in 1993 on land from Expo 92, aiming to give the city back a large green space on the island. Its name comes from the old Alamillo farmhouse, already present on 18th-century maps.

Tip: The mini-train leaves from the farmhouse. Kids' scooters and bikes fly across the meadows. The kiosks sell ice creams and soft drinks.

4

Mirador del puente del Alamillo

The park's northern viewpoint looks at the Alamillo bridge, Calatrava's 1992 work with its leaning mast and single pylon. It is the symbol of Expo-era Seville.

Tip: The return can be done by crossing the Alamillo bridge towards the Cartuja or retracing the way via the Barqueta. At sunset the bridge lights up.
